Three berberine products from our shelf: Thorne Berberine 200 mg capsules, Divine Bounty Berberine HCl 600 mg capsules, Deal Supplement Berberine Max with Turmeric capsules

Four of the six berberine labels on this page carry a milligram figure outside the Supplement Facts panel: 200 mg, 600mg Per Capsule and 1,500 mg per serving on three fronts, and 5,000 mg** on the Deal Supplement bottle. The other two fronts print a name, "BERBERINE COMPLEX" on one and "BERBERINE" above a list of other ingredients on the other, and no milligram figure. We read all six panels line by line and work out per-capsule and per-container figures where the printed numbers allow it. What berberine does is not a label question and is not answered here.

Six berberine Supplement Facts panels in one table

Each row gives the panel's serving size and its berberine line; where only a blend total appears, berberine is named under the blend and not weighed.

Label Serving size and berberine line
Thorne Berberine 200 mg One Capsule: Berberine HCl 200 mg
Divine Bounty Berberine HCl 600 mg 1 Capsule: Berberine HCl 600mg
NatureBell Berberine with Ceylon Cinnamon 3 capsules: HCl 300 mg + 1,200 mg blend
Deal Supplement Berberine Max with Turmeric 2 capsules: 5,000 mg blend, no HCl figure
Sangluco Berberine Cinnamon Complex 2 capsules: 600 mg blend, no berberine figure
Integrative Therapeutics Berberine Complex 2 capsules: 900 mg extracts, no berberine

Three of the six panels print a berberine HCl figure of their own: 200 mg, 600 mg and 300 mg. Two fold berberine HCl into a proprietary blend and print only the blend total, 5,000 mg on one and 600 mg on the other. The Integrative Therapeutics panel has no berberine line at all: it prints "Barberry (Berberis vulgaris) (root) Extract" 400 mg, "Oregon Grape (Berberis aquifolium) (root and stem) Extract" 400 mg and "Goldenseal (Hydrastis canadensis) (root and rhizome) Extract" 100 mg, and 400 mg + 400 mg + 100 mg = 900 mg. The word berberine appears on that panel only in the goldenseal line's standardization wording, quoted below.

Front number vs panel number, bottle by bottle

Thorne, 200 mg, and Divine Bounty, 600 mg. The Thorne front prints "200 mg"; the panel's column header reads "One Capsule Contains:" and its single line, "Berberine HCl (from Indian Barberry extract) (root) (Berberis aristata)", prints 200 mg. The Divine Bounty front prints "600mg Per Capsule" and "From Indian Barberry"; the panel prints "Berberine HCl (Berberis aristata root)" at 600mg, written without a space, for a serving of "1 Capsule". On both bottles the front figure is the berberine HCl in one capsule.

NatureBell, 1,500 mg. The front prints "1,500 mg per serving" and "3 in 1 formula". The panel splits the serving of "3 Vegetarian Capsules" into "Berberine HCl (Berberis aristata) (bark)" 300 mg and "Proprietary Blend" 1,200 mg, under which "Turmeric (Curcuma longa) (root)" and "Ceylon Cinnamon (Cinnamomum verum) (bark)" are listed without individual amounts. 300 mg + 1,200 mg = 1,500 mg: the front number is the whole serving, and the berberine HCl is 300 mg of it.

Deal Supplement, 5,000 mg. The front prints "berberine MAX", and "5,000 mg**" is printed on the bottle and on its product graphic. On the panel the 5,000 mg belongs to the line "Berberine Max Proprietary Blend", per serving of "2 Vegetarian Capsules"; "Berberine HCl" and "Turmeric Extract (Curcuma longa) (Root)" sit under it with no figures. The two-asterisk footnote that "5,000 mg**" points to is not visible in the photographs; the panel uses a single dagger with "† Daily Value not established." The 5,000 mg is a blend weight; the berberine HCl share is not printed.

Integrative Therapeutics and Sangluco, no number. The Integrative Therapeutics front prints "BERBERINE COMPLEX", "90 CAPSULES" and "DIETARY SUPPLEMENT". The Sangluco front prints "BERBERINE" followed by "CEYLON CINNAMON +", "CHROMIUM + BITTER MELON", "+ TURMERIC + APPLE CIDER" and "VINEGAR", plus "60 Capsules". On the Sangluco panel, "Berberine HCL (Berberis aristata) (root) extract", printed with a capital L, is the first of eleven components under a 600 mg proprietary blend, none of them weighed separately.

Berberine per capsule, where the panel allows the division

  • Divine Bounty: 600 mg berberine HCl per capsule, as printed.
  • Thorne: 200 mg berberine HCl per capsule, as printed.
  • NatureBell: 300 mg per 3 capsules is 100 mg berberine HCl per capsule; with the blend counted, 1,500 mg ÷ 3 = 500 mg of listed ingredients per capsule.
  • Deal Supplement: 5,000 mg ÷ 2 = 2,500 mg of blend per capsule; how much of that is berberine HCl is not printed.
  • Sangluco: 600 mg ÷ 2 = 300 mg of blend per capsule, shared among eleven components; the berberine HCL share is not printed.
  • Integrative Therapeutics: 900 mg ÷ 2 = 450 mg of the three extracts per capsule; no berberine figure to divide.

Lining up the figures: one Divine Bounty capsule (600 mg) matches three Thorne capsules, 3 × 200 mg = 600 mg, or six NatureBell capsules at the worked-out 100 mg each, 6 × 100 mg = 600 mg.

HCl, extract ratios and "standardized to"

Five of the six panels print HCl beside berberine. It names the hydrochloride form, and the figure on the line weighs that form: 200 mg, 600 mg and 300 mg on the three panels that weigh it, none on the Deal Supplement and Sangluco lines. Four of the five name the plant as Berberis aristata; the Deal Supplement line prints "Berberine HCl" and nothing after it. The two Integrative Therapeutics Berberis extracts are other species, vulgaris and aquifolium, with no berberine figure on either line.

Two panels print an extract ratio, both times beside an ingredient other than berberine: NatureBell prints "(from 10:1 extract)" after Ceylon Cinnamon, Deal Supplement "(from 20:1 extract)" after Turmeric Extract. A ratio of this kind describes a concentration step, raw plant material in relation to the extract made from it; it is not a milligram amount, and on both panels the ingredient carrying it is an unweighed blend component. A ratio is also easy to confuse with a count: the "10-in-1" front in our three-label mushroom read names ten mushrooms, six weighed at 100 mg each and four inside a 100 mg Proprietary Blend, and prints no ratio at all.

The third term is the standardization line on the Integrative Therapeutics goldenseal entry, "standardized to contain 5% total alkaloids including berberine and hydrastine". With that extract printed at 100 mg, 5% of 100 mg is 5 mg of total alkaloids per 2 capsules, and the panel does not say how the 5 mg is split among berberine, hydrastine and any other alkaloid; it is an alkaloid total, not a berberine figure.

Berberine per container

The per-serving line times the printed servings per container, or for Thorne the front count, gives each bottle total.

Label Per container, from the printed figures
Divine Bounty, 60 capsules 60 × 600 mg = 36,000 mg berberine HCl
NatureBell, 240 capsules 80 × 300 mg = 24,000 mg berberine HCl
Thorne, 60 capsules 60 (front count) × 200 mg = 12,000 mg
Deal Supplement, 240 capsules 120 × 5,000 mg = 600,000 mg of blend
Sangluco, 60 capsules 30 × 600 mg = 18,000 mg of blend
Integrative Therapeutics, 90 capsules 45 × 900 mg = 40,500 mg of extracts

The photographed Thorne panel prints "Serving Size: One Capsule" and no servings-per-container line, so its row uses the front's "60 CAPSULES" rather than a panel figure; the 12,000 mg is berberine HCl. On the other five, count divided by serving size matches the printed servings line (60 ÷ 1 = 60, 240 ÷ 3 = 80, 240 ÷ 2 = 120, 60 ÷ 2 = 30, 90 ÷ 2 = 45).

What else the six panels print: %DV, directions and warnings

Two of the six panels print a Daily Value percentage. The Sangluco panel, under the header "Amount Per 2 Capsules", lists eight vitamins and minerals with percentages above its 600 mg blend: first Vitamin C 100 mg (111%), last Chromium 134 mcg (383%), lowest Vitamin D3, printed as "5 mcg (200 IU)", at 25%, and Zinc 22 mg printed "200 %", with a space. The Integrative Therapeutics panel prints one percentage, "Total Carbohydrate" <1 g at <1%, above its three extracts. The other four print none. Every line that weighs berberine, a blend or an extract carries a dagger or asterisks instead of a percentage, footnoted that the Daily Value is not established: a single asterisk on Thorne, a dagger on Divine Bounty, NatureBell, Deal Supplement and Sangluco, two asterisks on Integrative Therapeutics. The unweighed component lines under the three blends carry no symbol and no percentage. For how a %DV figure climbs with the printed amount on one column, from 625% to 4,167% to 41,667%, see what seven B-complex labels print.

Three labels print directions in the photographs. NatureBell: "adults take three (3) capsules daily", one 3-capsule serving. Divine Bounty: "take one (1) capsule twice daily with meals", two capsules, or 2 × 600 mg = 1,200 mg of berberine HCl across a day as printed. Integrative Therapeutics prints a "Recommendation:" line reading "Adults swallow 1 softgel daily", while its panel serving size is "2 Capsules" and its front says "90 CAPSULES". The Thorne, Deal Supplement and Sangluco photographs show no directions text.

Warnings follow the same split. Divine Bounty prints a "CAUTION:" paragraph naming "Pregnant or nursing mothers" and "children under the age of 18", then "KEEP OUT OF REACH OF CHILDREN." and "DO NOT USE IF SAFETY SEAL IS DAMAGED OR MISSING." Integrative Therapeutics prints "Warning: Do not use if you are pregnant or nursing." and "Keep out of reach of children." Deal Supplement prints a "CALIFORNIA WARNING" about lead exposure which adds that "this warning does not mean the product is unsafe". No warning text appears in the NatureBell, Thorne or Sangluco photographs.

One last front-versus-panel comparison concerns cinnamon, where the two labels differ. Sangluco's front says "CEYLON CINNAMON +" while its panel line reads "Cinnamon bark powder", with no species printed; NatureBell's front says "with ceylon cinnamon & turmeric" and its panel prints the species, "Ceylon Cinnamon (Cinnamomum verum) (bark)".

Quick answers

Is berberine 5,000 mg what the Deal Supplement panel prints? The panel prints 5,000 mg for the "Berberine Max Proprietary Blend" per 2 Vegetarian Capsules; Berberine HCl is listed under that blend without a figure, so the panel gives 2,500 mg of blend per capsule and no berberine amount.

Which label prints the most berberine HCl per capsule? Of the three panels that weigh berberine HCl on its own, Divine Bounty prints 600 mg per capsule, Thorne 200 mg, and NatureBell 300 mg per 3 capsules, or 100 mg each.

Does a berberine complex panel always print a berberine figure? Neither of these two does. The Integrative Therapeutics Berberine Complex panel lists three extracts, 400 mg, 400 mg and 100 mg, and mentions berberine only in the goldenseal standardization wording; the Sangluco Berberine Cinnamon Complex panel names Berberine HCL first under a 600 mg blend with no figure of its own.

How much berberine is in a NatureBell serving, 1,500 mg or 300 mg? Both numbers are printed, for different things. The front's 1,500 mg per serving equals 300 mg of Berberine HCl plus the 1,200 mg Proprietary Blend of turmeric and Ceylon cinnamon.

Everything above is read off six labels and multiplied or divided with nothing added.
